This week on Helping Hand we have a returning guest: the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Hawai’i Chapter. We’ll learn about their mission to work toward curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases, and about the services they offer in the areas of health care, advocacy and education. We’ll also hear about some important fundraisers coming up as we welcome our guest, Executive Director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Hawai’i Chapter, Adrianna O’Donnell.

Today pioneering band Black Sabbath announced a farewell tour kicking off January 20th, which will include several west coast mainland cities in February, as well as a return to the Asia Pacific, with dates in Australia and New Zealand in April.

There are a few planets to try and spot this week, plus we return to the Mauna Kea summit for an exciting discovery of “Dogs in Space" as HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence speaks with Christopher Phillips from the Mauna Kea Astronomy Outreach Committee for this week’s Stargazer.

This week on Helping Hand, returning guests offer information on helping folks with mental illnesses, and the unique clubhouse day and evening programs. We’re privileged to be joined by the Psychosocial Rehabilitation/Case Management Service Coordinator at the Hawai'i Adult Mental Health Division of the Department of Health, Kathleen Miriam, and Peer Specialist Intern Martin Boegel.

Roger McGuinn has been in the islands and on HPR over the last couple of weeks. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer from the 60's/70's band The Byrds is touring the state, wrapping up with dates tonight in Hilo at the Palace Theatre, Saturday at the Honoka`a People's Theatre and Tuesday and Wednesday at the Iao Theatre on Maui. He also loaded into HPR's own theatre, the Atherton Performing Arts Studio, for a performance/interview session with All Things Considered HPR Host Dave Lawrence.

This week Helping Hand welcomes back the Alzheimer’s Association Aloha Chapter – and a new guest from that organization -- Steve Tam, Alzheimer’s Association Aloha Chapter Volunteer Advisory Board member.

In addition to finding out what to look for this week in our island skies, we hear about a discovery of a planet being described as similar to a “hot Jupiter" as HPR's Dave Lawrence speaks with Christopher Phillips from the Mauna Kea Astronomy Outreach Committee for this week’s Stargazer.
