HB1739: Bill Hoshijo

Today the House Judiciary Committee takes up whether your employer should be prohibited from asking for passwords and user names for your personal accounts. Although most of the testimony is in support of the bill, the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission executive director Bill Hoshijo says their support comes with a caveat. Hoshijo joined The Conversation to go over the Commission’s stance.

“Fire Is Ours” Song: Makana

Makana in the video for "Fire Is Ours"

Every social movement needs a song, and Makana has created one for the youth groundswell that seems to be accompanying the Bernie Sanders campaign.  His song “Fire is Ours,” with its ambitious self-produced video, has been seen by tens of thousands around the country in just a few days.  Makana is no stranger to social advocacy, or to the way music can inspire large numbers of people.  He joined us in our studio to talk about the song and its message. It’s large, remote and protected… and chances are you might never see the Papahānumokuākea Marine National Monument in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. An expedition starting next week will give you a chance to view in real time what researchers are discovering as a remotely operated underwater vehicle goes looking for adventure. Daniel Wagner is again the lead scientist for this journey of the NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer and he joined the show to talk about the new livestream of the monument.

The director of a pops orchestra has a two-part goal: to make orchestral music accessible to a wide audience by performing familiar works, and to find ways to breathe renewed life into those familiar and oft-performed pieces.   James Durham, music director of the Maui Pops Orchestra, has faced that challenge before, and this Sunday, he and his orchestra will add another challenge: supporting a visiting soloist Benjamin Baker. Winter Fantasy Pops takes place Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater in Kahului.
