During the week Prince William is in Vietnam on behalf of endangered animals threatened by consumers there, we continue our Helping Hand series about the rhino extinction crisis of poaching, rooted by rhino horn consumption primarily in Vietnam and China. Traffic is an NGO partnership between the World Wildlife Fund and the International Union for Conservation of Nature. HPR ATC Host Dave Lawrence speaks with their Vietnam Country Director Madelon Willemsen about the behavior change campaign Chi, or Strength of Will

Fridays on All Things Considered, Helping Hand puts the spotlight on an organization, topic or event that offers assistance to the disabled and others among the most vulnerable. Find a complete archive here.

A graph showing the 6000% rise in rhino poaching that has occurred at the same time a growing segment of Vietnamese society achieved greater income. For years the average was about 20 animals killed per year, before the skyrocketing figures began in 2008. At this pace, without intervention, conservationists forecast nearly all species of rhinos could be extinct in the wild within the next decade.

Prince William and wife Kate Middleton spending time with a baby rhino in India earlier this year. Prince William just made a historic visit to Vietnam to speak for the rhinoceros; Vietnam is the epicenter of the rhino extinction crisis, where a growing middle class consumption of rhino horn has caused the poaching rate to increase 6000% since 2008. William (and his brother Prince Harry) have become staunch advocates of rhinos, elephants and other endangered wildlife.
