This week Helping Hand welcomes back Claire Cutler, one of the hosts of the Homeward Bound Thanksgiving 5k  to end homelessness in Hawaii. It benefits area homeless service provider IHS, the Institute for Human Services. Hawaii is home to the worst homeless crisis anywhere in the United States per capita. Open to individuals and families of runners, joggers and walkers, it happens in Honolulu Thanksgiving morning at 7 a.m.

This week Helping Hand welcomes back After-School All-Stars Hawaii, who provide after-school programs for at-risk children, while introducing them to the Project Unify concept from Special Olympics Hāwaii to foster respect, inclusion and friendship between general ed students and special ed students with intellectual disabilities.

This week, HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence welcomes the Epilepsy Foundation of Hawaii back to Helping Hand. November is Epilepsy Awareness Month, and their annual conference is tomorrow at Queen’s Conference Center from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

This week Helping Hand previews the 2017 Footsteps to Transition Fair, tomorrow, Saturday October 21 at Windward Community College, 8:30 a.m. to noon for middle and high school students with special needs and their loved ones from across Oahu to assist in critical details of making transitions to adult life.

This week on Helping Hand, it’s distinguished returning guest Special Olympics Hawaii, offering participation in individual and team sports for intellectually disabled community members, and for people without intellectual disabilities in inspiring unified sports teams.

This week Helping Hand proudly welcomes back the National Federation of the Blind of Hawaii, advocating on behalf of the blind and those with vision challenges. Their annual state convention is September 30 & October 1 at 1901 Bachlot Street in Honolulu.

This week Helping Hand welcomes back NAMI Hawai‘i, the National Alliance on Mental Illness Hawai‘i. This year’s Walk For Mental Health is coming up October 14th in Honolulu, and there are a lot of ways to support them, from walking with a team, to volunteering to donating supplies and prizes.

This week we’re learning about Crisis Text Line, a free, nationwide 24/7 support for those in crisis. Users in Hawaii can text “Aloha” or “Start” to 741741 from anywhere in the US to text with a trained crisis counselor. HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence learned about the service and goal to find more volunteers with Katie Copeskey, Volunteer Crisis Counselor and Recruiter with Crisis Text Line.

This week Helping Hand welcomes back Hawaii Fido Service Dogs, a nonprofit internationally accredited in 2008 by ADI, Assistance Dogs International. October 20th their Dining with Dogs fundraising event is at the Honolulu Country Club, where their very special animals will be in attendance, and there are many other ways to support this invaluable organization.

This week on Helping Hand, the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Hawaii Executive Director Jade Guess speaks with HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence. The MDA of Hawaii are dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related neuromuscular diseases, and provides health care, advocacy and education.

This week on Helping Hand we’re welcoming back the Hawai‘i Parkinson Association. There are a lot of ways to offer them support, including a benefit event this Sunday at Hawai‘i Polo on the North Shore in the Honolulu area, or by participating in the Hawaii Parkinson Walk November 4th at Magic Island in Ala Moana Beach Park.
