William Shatner is joining forces with musical artist Brian Evans and comedian Paul Rodriguez for a show tomorrow night at the Sheraton Maui. The event offers partial proceeds to Mental Health Kokua and the American Sleep Apnea Association.

This week Helping Hand has an appropriate returning guest – the Hawai‘i Foodbank joins us in the studio for our Christmas afternoon together. They help a staggering one in five Hawai‘i residents with food, and it’s a privilege to learn about their services, and how we can support them, with Polly Kauahi, Vice President at the Hawai’i Foodbank.

In October, HPR got a chance to record a special conversation with John Oates during the Hall and Oates tour stop in Honolulu. With a strong connection to the islands dating back decades, HPR All Things Considered Local Host Dave Lawrence sat down with him for a conversation we share today, on Christmas afternoon.

This week on Helping Hand we’re learning about PACT Hawai’i – Parents and Children Together Hawai’i Family Service Agency. Among other things, they address domestic violence and child abuse, with counseling and a wide range of support for domestic violence batterers, victims, and child witnesses. It is a great privilege to welcome back the organization, with special guests Ryan Kusumoto, President & CEO, and Ha’aheo Mansfield, Senior VP of Programs.

This week in addition to several planets to look for, we get an update on a NASA mission into the Asteroid Belt and some unusual planetary features they discovered there, as HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence speaks with Christopher Phillips from the Mauna Kea Astronomy Outreach Committee for this week’s Stargazer.  

    

This week we’re welcoming back a returning guest, KORE Kaua`i. Kaua`i Ocean Recreation Experience, or KORE, is designed to help both Kaua`i residents and their families who are physically challenged or special needs, to get back into the ocean with the assistance of trained professionals. Today we’re privileged to learn more about this volunteer driven, non-profit with our guest, Fire Captain in Hanalei and leader of KORE, Kurt Leong.
