According to Hawaii Business Magazine, nearly 15-thousand boats are registered across the state, which is the fewest for any state.

But despite the relatively small numbers, many a sailing adventure begins or ends on the shores of one of our islands.

That’s the case with a recent arrival to Kauai’s Hanalei Bay.

The 55-foot sloop just completed a journey of nearly four-thousand miles from Fiji.

And HPR contributing reporter Joe Day was on hand to meet the crew.

The National Tropical Botanical Garden on Kauai is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.  Thousands of plant species are spread over nearly 2,000 acres at the natural preserve.   It’s also home to the Breadfruit Institute, the world’s leading center for the study of the plant.  Dr. Diane Ragone heads the institute and spoke with HPR contributing reporter Joe Day.

It’s been a little more than three years since a major earthquake and tsunami shattered the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in northern Japan.

For many in Hawaii, there are still questions about the lingering impact of that disaster…including the possibility of radiation reaching the islands.

That was the topic of a recent conference on Kauai…organized by Kauai Community College and the Surfrider Foundation.

HPR contributing reporter Joe Day spoke with several scientists at the conference—including marine biologist Doctor Carl Berg.

On the west side of Kauai, many acres of former sugar cane fields have been converted to a major testing area for genetically modified seeds.

The battle over their future has now moved from protestors to attorneys.

As part of our continuing series “Genetically Engineered: Beyond Emotion,” we get details from HPR news contributor Joe Day on Kauai.

Between 500-800 lanternfish and squid were found dead or dying near Nawiliwili on Kauai. That’s according to Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Frazer McGilvray works in the DLNR’s Division of Aquatic Resources. He says they’ve partnered with U-S Geological Survey biologists to collect samples to identify potential causes.

A date has been set for a Kauai County Council meeting to vote on whether to accept or override Mayor Bernard Carvalho’s veto of Bill 2491.

The bill would require large agriculture companies to disclose the use of pesticides and genetically modified crops. The six-member council would need five votes to override the Mayor’s veto. HPR’s Molly Solomon reports.

The next step in the battle on genetically modified organisms takes place on Kauai. The Kauai County Council is taking more time to consider a bill that would require companies to disclose the presence and use of pesticides and genetically modified crops. HPR’s Molly Solomon has the latest.
