Sometimes limitation can unlock the imagination, and that seems to be happening as you peer into a show of 55 tiny boxes at the Hawai’i State Art Museum Gallery Shop.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports, two local curators have challenged artists to create worlds inside four by four inch boxes.

The Hawai‘i State Art Museum, HiSAM, is one of the state’s best kept secrets, but that’s about to change.  The Friends of HiSAM have redone the shop with MORI by Art and Flea, the popular café sports rotating shows now, Family Second Saturdays are gaining momentum and HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports there’s even valet service to enjoy First Fridays.

The latest estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show adjusted retail and food service sales for November are up 1.4% from last year.  Non-store retailers, however, are up 7.3%, and food and drink establishments are up 6.5% from November last year.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa found consumers are saying a lot with their actions this year.

  Shopping is more than necessity or recreation for Americans, the global economy relies on American consumption and this is the height of the season.  Locally, retail accounts for 25% of Hawai‘i’s workforce and is the largest contributor to the state’s excise tax revenue. HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports Honolulu shoppers have some new options this year in the ‘Ewa wing of Ala Moana Center.

  An expansive and enjoyable sale of primarily local contemporary art is underway for just a few days at Spalding House in Makiki, the former Contemporary Museum.   HPR’s Noe Tanigawa attended the Contempo #Artshop opening to peruse the inventory.
