This week Helping Hand has returning guest After-School All-Stars Hawaii with President & CEO Dawn Dunbar and Program Director David Asato speaking about their afterschool programs that offer a safe environment for children to learn, as well as opportunities to integrate general education kids with those from special education and who are facing disabilities of all kinds.

This week on Helping Hand we’re learning about Shriners Hospitals for Children Honolulu with Mahealani Richardson, Director of Public Relations, speaking with HPR All Things Considered local host Dave Lawrence.

This week on Helping Hand we’re welcoming back the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawai‘i. Honolulu’s two Ronald McDonald Houses are in continual operation for families that must come to the Honolulu area seeking specialized medical treatments for their children’s catastrophic illnesses. This week Helping Hand welcomes back Honolulu Habitat for Humanity in advance of their next build scheduled for February, and we also learn about a new program that helps keep people safely and affordably in their home, called Home Preservation. Hear HPR ATC Host Dave Lawrence speak with Honolulu Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Jim Murphy.

Helping Hand airs on All Things Considered on HPR1 Friday afternoons and tries to put the spotlight on an organization, topic or event that offers assistance to the disabled and the most vulnerable with local ATC host Dave Lawrence.

As Hawai’i grapples with the most devastating homeless crisis in the United States on a per capita basis, this week Helping Hand welcomes back IHS – the Institute for Human Services. Clinical Director Jerry Coffee joins HPR All Things Considered Local Host Dave Lawrence for a conversation.

    

This week Helping Hand has an appropriate returning guest – the Hawai‘i Foodbank joins us in the studio for our Christmas afternoon together. They help a staggering one in five Hawai‘i residents with food, and it’s a privilege to learn about their services, and how we can support them, with Polly Kauahi, Vice President at the Hawai’i Foodbank.

  

This week on Helping Hand we’re learning about PACT Hawai’i – Parents and Children Together Hawai’i Family Service Agency. Among other things, they address domestic violence and child abuse, with counseling and a wide range of support for domestic violence batterers, victims, and child witnesses. It is a great privilege to welcome back the organization, with special guests Ryan Kusumoto, President & CEO, and Ha’aheo Mansfield, Senior VP of Programs.
